Hiking

From trails that begin at the beach and continue along cliffs that plunge into the sea, offering endless views of the Mediterranean. Paths steeped in history that lead us to 16th-century anti-corsair defense towers or to the best-preserved funerary tower on the peninsula.

Road to the Watchtower of l'Aguiló

This path gives access to the Aguiló tower, one of the best preserved, oldest and most important of the defense system against Berber corsair attacks created in the Kingdom of Valencia during the time of Philip II (16th century).

The monument has recently been restored and the access road has been improved and equipped with rest areas.

Camino de Santiago
Volta a El Cantal PR-CV 437

This route will take us to the heart of the mountains of La Vila Joiosa. It traverses the highest peaks of La Vila Joiosa, passes by the emblematic Cantal crag, whose name derives from the Latin word "cant," meaning thick stone, and runs alongside the old border between the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile.

It's a long but easy route, as it mainly follows forest tracks. This trail boasts a rich natural environment, allowing us to enjoy a variety of birds and typical Mediterranean vegetation, such as pines and honeysuckle, a climbing plant that, in shady areas, winds its way through the existing vegetation, creating a tangled web. In fact, this route takes us through one of the few remaining pine forests near the coast.

La Colada de la Costa

The Colada de la Costa is a circular coastal route of approximately 8 kilometers, taking about 2 hours to complete, with a low to medium difficulty level. It runs along part of the Villajoyosa coastline between Playa del Torres and Torre del Aguiló in La Cala. This trail, designated as a Blue Trail, follows the route of an old cattle track along the Mediterranean coast and allows hikers to discover cliffs, coves, historic towers, and some of the best-preserved natural landscapes in the municipality.

Snorkel

Snorkeling Routes

The extensive coastline and diverse beaches and coves of La Vila Joiosa offer opportunities for various water sports. Among these is snorkeling, which involves observing the underwater world from the surface using a mask and snorkel.

Snorkeling at Racó del Conill

This famous naturist cove, located in the northern part of the municipality, lies discreetly nestled between the mountains and boasts excellent turquoise waters that are usually crystal-clear and teeming with marine life.

It’s a real treat to explore its sparkling depths, constantly flanked by schools of fish—including mojarras in the rocky areas, vast schools of salpas over Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds, and mabras, herreras, or pelayas on the glistening sandy bottoms—all landscapes we encounter on this underwater tour.

Snorkeling in Varadero

Varadero Beach is located next to the Club Nàutic La Vila and adjacent to Estudiantes and Tio Roig beaches. It offers an excellent snorkeling spot, though it also has all the amenities for those who prefer to simply relax and enjoy the sun.

Snorkeling at Puntes del Moro

Just south of town, we find this excellent cove with easy parking and a beach bar where we can cool off. It’s a rocky cove—not too crowded but charming—with clear waters and a welcoming seabed.

Snorkeling at L'Esparrelló

South of La Vila Joiosa, next to the Montiboli Hotel, is the entrance to “L’Esparrelló” Beach, a secluded naturist spot. As soon as you go down the stairs, you’ll see some huge rocks where you can put on your fins, goggles, and snorkel and enter the water.

Snorkeling at La Caleta

One of the most secluded spots along La Vila’s coastline is the beach known as “La Caleta,” located at the foot of an exclusive hotel from which it can be accessed directly, although the alternative route takes you to the neighboring cove of “L’Esparrelló,” from where you can cross to the right and walk to “La Caleta.”

Amadorio Reservoir

Recreational area located in the natural environment of the Amadorio reservoir.

An ideal natural area to enjoy the inland landscape of the Marina Baixa region. The reservoir’s surroundings are perfect for walks, nature activities, and enjoying a peaceful space surrounded by Mediterranean vegetation.

Viewpoints

City Wall

Designated a Site of Cultural Interest, the Renaissance city walls of La Vila Joiosa are a unique example in the Mediterranean. Built in the 16th century to defend the city from corsair pirates, today they form part of a fascinating historic complex alongside its fortress-church.

Aguiló Tower

The Aguiló Tower is one of the oldest coastal watchtowers in the Marina Baixa region and one of the finest examples of the anti-pirate defense system along the Valencian coast. Built around 1530 on a spectacular cliff, it was used to monitor the sea and warn of possible attacks by Barbary pirates using smoke and fire signals.

Malladeta Tower

The Malladeta Tower stands atop the Malladeta site and archaeological site, visually overlooking the coast and Paradís Beach. This structure is linked to Dr. José María Esquerdo, a prominent neurologist and psychiatrist, as well as one of the most prestigious political figures in late-19th-century Spain and leader of the Progressive Republican Party. From this tower, he oversaw the psychiatric sanatorium he built at the foot of the hill, next to the sea.

The center was part of the innovative medical project developed by Esquerdo, a pioneer in Spain in the introduction of modern neuropsychiatry and advanced therapeutic methods such as occupational therapy, which he also applied at the sanatorium he had previously founded in Carabanchel (Madrid) in 1877.

Accessible location
