Malladeta Tower

The Malladeta Tower stands atop the Malladeta site and archaeological site, visually overlooking the coast and Paradís Beach. This structure is linked to Dr. José María Esquerdo, a prominent neurologist and psychiatrist, as well as one of the most prestigious political figures in late-19th-century Spain and leader of the Progressive Republican Party. From this tower, he oversaw the psychiatric sanatorium he built at the foot of the hill, next to the sea.

The center was part of the innovative medical project developed by Esquerdo, a pioneer in Spain in the introduction of modern neuropsychiatry and advanced therapeutic methods such as occupational therapy, which he also applied at the sanatorium he had previously founded in Carabanchel (Madrid) in 1877.

The tower is part of one of Villajoyosa’s most notable historical and scenic sites, a place that combines archaeological heritage, scientific history, and panoramic views of the Mediterranean. In 2021, an initial restoration project was carried out to partially restore its original appearance and ensure its preservation.

Currently, the tower is not open to visitors, although it can be viewed from the outside while exploring the area around Malladeta.
