The project improves road safety, pedestrian accessibility and energy efficiency in an urban environment linked to the waterfront.
The Villajoyosa City Council is making progress in improving road safety and pedestrian mobility with the implementation of a smart pedestrian crossing on Varadero Avenue, a road of urban and tourist importance in the municipality.
The action is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination “La Vila Joiosa. Diversification of the offer and sustainable tourism management” and is financed by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
The Councillor for Mobility, Jaime Santamaría, stated that “the new pedestrian crossing incorporates high-efficiency LED lighting, both on the road surface and on vertical signage, which will only activate when pedestrians are detected.” The system includes motion sensors, allowing the lighting to be activated only during actual crossings and preventing unnecessary, continuous operation.
The solution operates using solar energy, without consuming electricity from the grid, and will be designed to enhance the visibility of the crossing, especially during times of lower light levels. In this way, the project “contributes to improving the safety and comfort of pedestrians of all ages and abilities.”
The project is located on Varadero Avenue, a street “of high urban and tourist importance, reinforcing pedestrian accessibility between local transit areas and spaces linked to the activity of the waterfront. Furthermore, it promotes more sustainable mobility by facilitating pedestrian travel in safer and more comfortable conditions,” stated Mayor Marcos Zaragoza.
With this action, Villajoyosa continues to incorporate innovative technological solutions into public spaces, with the aim of improving safety, accessibility and the quality of the urban environment, while reinforcing its commitment to a safer, more modern and sustainable destination model.
