Villajoyosa will host the 3rd Seminar on Scientific Diving Applied to Cultural Heritage this Saturday, July 11th. Organized by the University of Alicante’s University Center and the City Council, the event, which will take place at Vilamuseu, will feature expert speakers addressing topics across the field of underwater archaeology, from the most innovative methods for underwater excavation and the extraction of historic ships to the conservation of objects of underwater origin.

The faculty is made up of researchers who currently participate in and lead the most important underwater archaeology projects being developed in Spain, such as the study of the Punic shipwreck of El Sec de Mallorca, the excavation of the underwater treasure of Portitxol de Xàbia, the latest interventions in the Bou Ferrer shipwreck and the anchorage of La Vila Joiosa, the extraction of the late Roman ship of Ses Fontanelles de Mallorca and the recent identification of the ship El Fernando, of the Alicante scientist Jorge Juan, discovered on the coast of Malaga.
Mayor Marcos Zaragoza stated that “with this third edition, the University of Alicante and the Villajoyosa City Council have consolidated a course that makes the city a benchmark for scientific diving applied to archaeology, as it brings together the best conditions, both scientific, with the Bou Ferrer and Vilamuseu sites, and in terms of services, with an unbeatable offer of hotels and restaurants.”
The inauguration, at 9:30 a.m., will be carried out by the Mayor Marcos Zaragoza; the maritime captain of Alicante Enrique Sanmartín; and the Vice-Rector of Infrastructure of the UA, Salvador Ivorra.
