The experience combines storytelling, heritage, and digital content to diversify the municipality’s cultural tourism offerings.
The Villajoyosa City Council has created a new guided route through the municipality’s historic cemetery, conceived as a tourist and cultural experience aimed at discovering local memory through its characters, symbols and traditions.
The action is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination “La Vila Joiosa. Diversification of the offer and sustainable tourism management” and is financed by the European Union through the NextGenerationEU funds, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
The Councillor for Cemeteries, Marisa Mingot, explained that “our cemetery holds historical, artistic, and social significance that we wanted to share with our residents and tourists.” The route is designed as an immersive experience that combines guided narration with supporting digital resources. Throughout the tour, visitors can access multimedia content via QR codes, including dramatized audio recordings, historical photographs, historical documents, and recreations, enriching their understanding of the space.
The Councillor for Tourism, Rosa Llorca, indicated that “the objective is to enhance the value of the historic cemetery as a tourist and cultural resource, integrating a little-exploited heritage into the destination’s offering and facilitating a respectful, attractive and understandable interpretation of its historical, artistic and social relevance.”
This initiative will diversify Villajoyosa’s tourism offerings and “help redistribute tourist flows to new areas of the municipality and strengthen the connection between visitors, residents, and local identity.” With this new route, Villajoyosa reinforces its position as an innovative cultural destination, incorporating experiences that combine storytelling, heritage, and new formats for interpreting tourism.
