CULTURAL AREAS

Kilometres of coastline, exceptional natural landscapes, thousands of years of history... these are some of the characteristics of this seaside town on the Costa Blanca. A city with a great historical, natural and cultural heritage that has shaped the way of being and living of its inhabitants and visitors. All this cultural trace left by the different civilizations populating the area in the past, has turned the people of La Vila Joiosa into great culture consumers and also great creators.

La Vila Joiosa offers a wide and varied cultural programme. The combination of the activities offered by the local cultural institutions and the artistic proposals of regional, national or international level programmed from the area of culture, allows neighbours and visitors to enjoy a wide variety of artistic modalities in the cultural spaces of La Vila Joiosa.

AUDITORIUM THEATRE

This auditorium, with a capacity of 820 people, is a modern and original space, built by the architects José Mª Torres Nadal and Antonio Marquerie. It was selected to be exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in New York (MOMA) as one of the reference projects of contemporary Spanish architecture.

The Teatre Auditori is the centre of the town cultural management, and offers a varied cultural programme throughout the year, except July and August. During these summer months the 'art' moves to other spaces. In August for instance the 'Teatre i Carrer' cycle fills the streets and squares of the city with theatre and different multidisciplinary shows.

BARBERA DELS ARAGONÉS

This open-air auditorium concentrates most of the cultural events in summer. It is a large space located in the gardens of the 'Barbera dels Aragonés' House-Museum. A 17th century country house transformed into a romantic mansion that belonged to the Aragonés, an important family of politicians, religious and military.

At the beginning of the 21st century, already municipally owned, it became a house-museum and the surrounding fields were transformed into the green area of the city centre and a daily meeting place. There are children's playgrounds and also the 'archaeological garden' , where some remains from different nearby excavations have been moved.

Another of the cultural spaces found in 'La Barbera' is the EAC, 'Espai d'Art Contemporani'. These are the stables of the farmhouse which nowadays hosts this exhibition space where we can often find exhibitions by contemporary artists.

AUDITORI SOCIAL CENTRE

In the Social Centre 'Llar del Pensionista', located in front of 'La Barbera' and a few metres from the Teatre Auditori, we find an auditorium with a capacity for 300 people in which small format shows or shows for small audiences are programmed. The hall of this social centre also hosts different exhibitions throughout the year.

If you decide to share a few days, a holiday or your whole life with us, you will enjoy interesting cultural activities, the perfect complement to days on the beach, hiking routes, water activities or good rice and fish dishes on a charming terrace in front of the Mediterranean. Oh, and after the theatre,.. do you fancy a chocolate?
