Xarco Tower

The Xarco Tower is a 16th-century coastal watchtower built to protect the coastline from attacks by Barbary pirates. Situated on a rocky promontory next to Xarco Cove, it was part of the defensive maritime surveillance system along the Valencian coast. It is currently designated a Site of Cultural Interest and is located on private property, so the interior is not open to the public.

The Torre del Xarco, also known as the Torre del Charco, is a coastal watchtower built in the 16th century during the reign of Philip II as part of the defensive system along the Mediterranean coast against frequent attacks by Barbary pirates.

Located on a rocky promontory south of the cove that bears its name, this tower served a strategic role in surveillance and early warning within the network of coastal towers in the Marina Baixa. From here, maritime traffic was monitored, and warnings of possible enemy incursions were sent via smoke signals during the day and bonfires at night, communicating with other towers and the town of Villajoyosa.

Architecturally, it features a circular, truncated conical floor plan constructed of masonry, approximately seven meters in diameter and about twelve meters high. The original entrance is situated about five meters above the ground—a common defensive feature in this type of structure—and is further protected by a machicolation from which the entrance could be defended.

The tower was designated a Site of Cultural Interest in 1996, and although it retains much of its original structure, it shows some damage caused by the passage of time and marine erosion. It is currently located on private property, so it can only be viewed from the outside and from nearby public roads and areas.

Its natural setting, next to Xarco Cove and Beach, is also one of the most peaceful and unique spots along the Villajoyosa coastline.
