Sant Josep Tower

The Sant Josep Tower is one of the most unique Roman monuments in the Valencian Community and the largest preserved Roman funerary tower in Spain. It was built between 150 and 170 AD as a mausoleum for a prominent figure from the Roman city of Allon, an important Roman settlement located in what is now Villajoyosa.

The tower, built of large stone blocks and with a monumental appearance, was completely enclosed, except for a few small openings on its east and west sides intended for libations or ritual offerings of wine in honor of the deceased. In 2016, it was discovered that a tombstone preserved at Vilamuseu, dedicated to Lucius Terentius Mancinus, likely originally belonged to this funerary monument.

Over the centuries, the tower underwent various transformations and was plundered on several occasions. The current entrance was opened during the Middle Ages to loot the interior, and in 1543, some of its upper ashlars were removed to rebuild the walls of Villajoyosa following attacks by Barbary pirates. Many of these blocks were scattered throughout the surrounding area, which has allowed archaeologists to partially reconstruct its original appearance.

Between 2008 and 2015, the site was the focus of major archaeological and restoration work spearheaded by the Valencian Regional Government, the Villajoyosa City Council, and patron Elaine Evans. During these excavations, one of the largest Roman burial complexes in Europe was discovered, featuring gardens, monumental pedestals, and sculptures associated with the mausoleum.

Currently, the archaeological site features interpretive panels dedicated to the history of the tower, the excavations, the Roman funerary gardens, and other findings related to the ancient city of Allon, making it a must-see for anyone interested in learning about Villajoyosa’s Roman heritage.
