Rice Week

There are dry ones, creamy ones, and soupy ones. There are meat, vegetable, and/or fish ones. There are traditional and modern ones. There are…a thousand varieties and something for everyone, or almost everyone. Besides its many preparation possibilities, rice, and rice culture, is very much present in the popular recipes of La Vila Joiosa.

Rice dishes are deeply rooted in La Vila’s cuisine, which is why the town’s restaurant owners and the city council decided in 2011 to create the Setmana de l’Arròs. This event builds on the well-established La Vila Gastronómica and serves as a mark of quality, following a decade of impeccable success with the Mostra de Cuina Marinera.

In addition, this “Rice Week,” with its more flexible format than the Mostra, allows more restaurants to participate, thus offering a more complete picture of the municipality’s vast culinary offerings. This demonstrates, once again, that Vilera’s rich and varied cuisine is one of the driving forces behind the town’s economy, as it is one of its main tourist attractions.

During Setmana de l’Arròs, the restaurants participating in the event offer a set menu featuring rice as the main course. This menu—which includes an appetizer, main course, and dessert—allows us to experience Viler cuisine, and especially the versatility of a product as quintessentially local as rice, at affordable prices.
