Escalonades.

The Escalonades are a series of traditional pedestrian stairways that connect the historic center of Villajoyosa with Centro Beach, the boardwalk, and the city’s waterfront. These stairways were built to bridge the natural elevation difference of about twenty meters between the old town, which sits on a cliff overlooking the sea, and the beach below, and have been part of the daily lives of residents, fishermen, and merchants for generations.

In 2019, the Villajoyosa City Council and the group Espai de Debat en Positiu Equinocci launched a project to restore and highlight these traditional access points through artistic and cultural initiatives. Each “Baixada” is dedicated to a representative aspect of Villajoyosa’s identity, such as cinema, the Mediterranean, chocolate, or fishing.

Baixada del Cine

This staircase pays tribute to Villajoyosa’s cinematic tradition and to the many movie theaters that shaped the town’s cultural life during the 20th and 21st centuries. Located next to the former Cine Paz, it commemorates historic venues such as the Teatro Circo, the Cine Olimpia, the Jonia, and the popular summer movie theaters that brought La Vila’s summer nights to life.

Mediterranean Coast

The Baixada Mediterrània highlights the close relationship between Villajoyosa and the sea. These traditional stairways connect the historic district with the beach and serve as a reminder of how, for centuries, the port of Villajoyosa has been the region’s main link to the Mediterranean and to other cultures, products, and ideas that arrived by sea.

Chocolate Run

The Baixada del Xocolate is dedicated to one of Villajoyosa’s defining characteristics: its chocolate-making tradition. Since the 18th century, the city has maintained a significant industry linked to cocoa, which is still present today in its factories, chocolate shops, and museums, making La Vila one of Spain’s most renowned chocolate destinations.

Baixada de la Pesca

The Baixada de la Pesca pays tribute to Villajoyosa’s historic seafaring tradition and its fishermen. For centuries, fishing has been one of the city’s main economic and cultural drivers, and its fish market remains one of the most important in the Valencian Community today.
