San Pedro Promenade

The Passeig Sant Pere is one of the most charming spots in Villajoyosa’s historic center. Located across from Centro Beach and next to the Costera de la Mar, this promenade is part of the town’s traditional seaside front. Its colorful houses and historical ties to maritime trade and fishing make it an iconic place steeped in identity and tradition.

This promenade occupies the site of the ancient port warehouses of the Roman city of Allon and forms part of the town’s historic waterfront. The current area began to develop in the 18th century, when population growth forced the city to expand beyond its walls, creating the traditional seaside suburb. During the 19th century, this area was known as the “Rincón de La Habana,” both for the colorful facades of its buildings and for the close commercial ties that La Vila Joiosa maintained with the Americas, particularly Cuba.

At that time, Villajoyosa was one of the most important ports linked to Alcoy’s industry. Large sailing ships loaded with manufactured goods, such as cigarette paper and textiles, set sail from here bound for Spain’s overseas colonies.

The promenade also preserves the memory of ancient folk traditions linked to the sea and fishing. Every June 29, the festival of Saint Peter—the former patron saint of fishermen—was celebrated here, featuring a fair, greased pole contests, falucho regattas, and the popular game of “Basi.” This tradition involved dyeing the water of the Bací fountain red and tossing coins into it for the children to find.

Today, Passeig Sant Pere remains one of the most picturesque and frequently photographed spots in Villajoyosa, ideal for strolling along the seafront and discovering the town’s maritime and commercial history.
