City Wall

From the 16th to the 18th century, La Vila Joiosa was the target of constant invasions by Turkish and Algerian corsairs. Following the attacks of 1538 and 1543, which razed the town to the ground, a Royal Order was issued to rebuild its defenses. The result was a walled belt with circular bastions designed with sloped bases to better withstand cannon fire.

A Unique Defensive System: The walls of La Vila are an example of the “pre-bastioned Renaissance” style, an architectural style that existed for only a brief period and disappeared with the advent of star-shaped fortresses (Vauban-style). Because of their rarity, they are considered exceptional. In addition, the Church of the Assumption is integrated into the complex as a fortress-church, with its large apse serving as the main tower.

Preserved bastions:

• Baluard del Pou (of the Well): Near the sea and the old Sant Vicent well.

• Baluard del Retor (del Cura): Near the abbey.

• Baluard del Portalet: Recently restored on Costereta Street, completing the view of the three original Renaissance towers.

This complex was designated a Site of Cultural Interest in 1985, cementing La Vila Joiosa’s status as one of the best-preserved historic cities in the Mediterranean.
