The Enchanted Rock

The Enchanted Rock is a curious rock formation linked to one of Villajoyosa’s best-known folk legends. Located next to an old traditional path, this site is part of Villajoyosa’s folklore and oral tradition associated with the magical night of San Juan.

The Enchanted Rock is one of the most unique and legendary sites in Villajoyosa’s folk heritage. This peculiar rock formation, located alongside an old traditional path, has been surrounded for generations by stories and tales passed down orally.

The best-known legend tells that on the night of San Juan, the rock mysteriously opens, and an elderly woman dressed entirely in white emerges from within, wearing a wide-brimmed hat adorned with colorful ribbons. According to tradition, young people had to try to grab one of those ribbons before the lady disappeared back inside the rock. Whoever managed to grab a colored ribbon was promised true love; however, the legend warned of the danger of choosing the black ribbon, which was associated with a tragic fate.

The Enchanted Rock is part of the rich intangible heritage and folk traditions associated with the night of San Juan, one of the most magical and symbolic celebrations in the Mediterranean. Today, it remains a place linked to the memories, legends, and folk culture of La Vila Joiosa.
