Poble Nou Route

The significant population increase experienced by Villajoyosa during the 18th century made it necessary for the town to expand beyond its historic center. Beginning in 1804, a new neighborhood began to develop on the other side of the Amadorio River, known as the Poble Nou or Pueblo Nuevo.

The route begins at Plaza de la Luz, the true heart of this urban expansion, and allows visitors to discover how the city was transformed as its economic and commercial activity grew. The old highway branched off toward what is now Alicante Street, which crossed the river via a natural ford and entered the town through a new opening in the city walls, known as the Travesseret.

The construction of the highway bridge in 1868 provided a major boost to the area’s development and led to the emergence of the Cervantes neighborhood, consolidating Villajoyosa’s urban expansion toward the left bank of the river.
