Our Lady of the Assumption Church-Fortress

The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption is one of the most iconic landmarks in the historic center of Villajoyosa and one of the three fortress churches in the province of Alicante. Built in the mid-16th century as part of the city’s Renaissance walled system, it combines religious and defensive functions, reflecting the strategic importance of La Vila Joiosa in the face of pirate attacks along the Mediterranean coast.

Externally, it stands out for its austere, military-style appearance, with thick walls, few windows, and an apse that forms part of the old city wall. One of its most distinctive features is the parapet walk that circles the roof, equipped with arrowslits for defense and curious cannon-shaped gargoyles. From this walkway, visitors can also enjoy magnificent views of the historic district and the coastline.

The church is built in the Levantine Gothic style, with a single nave and chapels situated between buttresses, reflecting a simple and functional architectural design. In the 18th century, the main façade—in the Classicist Baroque style—and the chapels of the Immaculate Conception and the Communion were added. The latter houses the image of Saint Martha, patron saint of the city, a 17th-century carving closely linked to local festive and religious traditions.

In recent decades, significant research, restoration, and conservation efforts have been carried out, spearheaded by the parish, the diocese, the Villajoyosa City Council, and the Alicante Provincial Council. The church has been designated a Site of Cultural Interest.
