Gil’s Salt Bridge

The Pont del Salt d’En Gil is a historic bridge spanning the Amadorio River, set in a natural environment of great scenic beauty. Dating back to ancient times and renovated in the 18th century, it is one of the most iconic traditional crossings in the heart of Villajoyosa.

The Pont del Salt d’En Gil, also popularly known as the Pont de Sant Argil, is a historic structure spanning the Amadorio River at one of the narrowest and most distinctive points along its course. Although the name Sant Argil is most commonly used today, historical documents have referred to this site since the 15th century by its original name, Salt d’En Gil. For centuries, the bridge has served as an important traditional crossing linked to ancient rural roads and traffic between the municipality’s various agricultural districts.

The current building was renovated in the 18th century and is part of Villajoyosa’s historical and ethnographic heritage. In 2022, it sustained significant damage due to a storm and was subsequently restored to ensure its preservation, safety, and aesthetic restoration while respecting its traditional appearance.

The bridge is also very close to other sites of historical and legendary interest, such as the Enchanted Rock, which is linked to ancient folk legends surrounding the night of San Juan.

Today, the Pont del Salt d’En Gil is a pleasant spot to stop and stroll amid nature, ideal for exploring the rural and historic landscape along the Amadorio River.
