Snorkeling at La Caleta
One of the most secluded spots along La Vila’s coastline is the beach known as “La Caleta,” located at the foot of an exclusive hotel from which it can be accessed directly, although the alternative route takes you to the neighboring cove of “L’Esparrelló,” from where you can cross to the right and walk to “La Caleta.”
Here we find two beaches separated by a rocky headland. The most interesting stretch for us is the second one, so we can enter the water at that headland and begin our swim, keeping the shoreline on our right. At the start, we come across a flat area and rocky outcrops jutting out into the sea. The seabed consists of small pebbles, which contribute to the water’s brightness but can eventually make the water look a bit cloudy.
As soon as we move a little way from the coastline, large rocks begin to appear here and there, sometimes isolated and other times clustered together. On top of them, a small flounder—that flat, whitish fish—will sometimes rest; spotting it will require our full attention, given this intelligent animal’s extraordinary ability to blend in and go unnoticed.
If we move even further out, the Posidonia becomes denser and soon forms a vast belt that shelters schools of salps. Beyond the Posidonia comes the sand, already at about -3 meters, so it’s best not to stray too far and to stay close to the rocks where marine life is more easily visible. This way, we can continue to a small islet resting at a depth of just over -2 meters, which we can circle. The walls, covered in brown algae and dotted with numerous crevices, are home to a good number of small creatures such as gobies and perhaps a sea hare.
Then it’s a good time to change course and head back closer to the coast, navigating around the string of rocks dotting the seabed—covered with algae such as Padina pavonica and Acetabularia, which, as we know, are biological indicators of the high quality of these waters—until we return to the starting point.
We recommend respecting the marine environment, refraining from removing any flora or fauna, and exercising extreme caution while snorkeling and when accessing rocky areas. Always check sea conditions and the flag system before beginning the activity.
