Volta a El Cantal PR-CV 437

This route will take us to the heart of the mountains of La Vila Joiosa. It traverses the highest peaks of La Vila Joiosa, passes by the emblematic Cantal crag, whose name derives from the Latin word "cant," meaning thick stone, and runs alongside the old border between the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile.

It's a long but easy route, as it mainly follows forest tracks. This trail boasts a rich natural environment, allowing us to enjoy a variety of birds and typical Mediterranean vegetation, such as pines and honeysuckle, a climbing plant that, in shady areas, winds its way through the existing vegetation, creating a tangled web. In fact, this route takes us through one of the few remaining pine forests near the coast.

The El Cantal Loop is one of the most comprehensive and scenic mountain routes in the municipality of Villajoyosa. This circular route covers the highest and most forested part of the municipality, allowing you to discover some of the few remaining pine forests near the coast in the region.

The route, approximately 19.2 kilometers long and taking about 5 hours, runs mainly along forest tracks and mountain paths of moderate difficulty, making it a long but technically easy hike. Along the way, you'll pass through areas of great environmental richness, with characteristic Mediterranean vegetation such as pine forests, honeysuckle, and coastal scrub, as well as various viewpoints offering sweeping vistas of the Mediterranean Sea and the inland mountain ranges.

The route passes by the emblematic rock of El Cantal, whose name derives from the Latin term "cant", which means thick stone, and also runs through the area of ​​the old historical border between the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile, also adding historical interest to the route.

From various points along the route, you can take alternative routes and additional excursions. To the south, the Aigüeta ravine leads down to Xarco beach, while to the north, a path runs along the crest of the Serra de la Mola, offering spectacular panoramic views of the coastline and the mountainous interior. From this area, you can also access the Amadorio reservoir via unmarked trails.

Thanks to its combination of landscape, nature and history, the Vuelta a El Cantal is an excellent option for those who wish to discover the most unknown natural environment of Villajoyosa.

It is recommended to undertake this route wearing appropriate hiking boots, comfortable clothing, and carrying sufficient water, especially during the warmer months. Due to the length of the route and the lack of shade in some sections, it is advisable to avoid the midday hours and check the weather forecast beforehand. It is important to always stay on the marked trails, not to litter, and to minimize your impact on the natural environment and wildlife.

The route is especially recommended during autumn, winter and spring, when temperatures are milder and the landscape offers better conditions for hiking.
